At the heart of sustainable development is transport. Worldwide the sector accounts for around a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions, derived largely from cars and trucks. Cities and urban areas in Scotland, and the world, many of them growing massively, have to wake up to this reality and change direction, with urban planning and design that gives priority to sustainable transport. That way we make cities more competitive and liveable while helping to solve the problem of climate change.

ITDP, the Institute for Transport and Development Policy, “promoting equitable and sustainable transportation worldwide,” have produced a report Our Cities Ourselves: The Future of Transportation in Urban Life. It’s not a very appealing title – what on earth does “Our Cities Ourselves” mean? – but the contents are well worth a deck, a browse, and even more particularly, a read.

This publication shows how cities from New York to Nairobi can meet the challenges of rapid population growth and climate change while improving their competitiveness. The publication’s purpose is to reframe the issue of transport so that it is no longer seen as separate from, but rather integral to, urban design. According to one of the joint authors, “Cities of the twenty-first century should be lively cities, safe cities, sustainable cities and healthy cities. All of these qualities can be achieved if we embrace ten principles, which means putting people first.” So what are those ten principles?

The Ten Principles of Sustainable Transport

1. Walk the walk: Create great pedestrian environments.
2. Powered by people: Create a great environment for bicycles and other non-motorized vehicles.
3. Get on the bus: Provide great, cost-effective public transport.
4. Cruise control: Provide access for clean passenger vehicles at safe speeds and in significantly reduced numbers.
5. Deliver the goods: Service the city in the cleanest and safest manner.
6. Mix it up: Mix people and activities, buildings and spaces.
7. Fill it in: Build dense, people and transit oriented urban districts that are desirable.
8. Get real: Preserve and enhance the local, natural, cultural, social and historical assets.
9. Connect the blocks: Make walking trips more direct, interesting and productive with small-size, permeable buildings and blocks.
10. Make it last: Build for the long term. Sustainable cities bridge generations. They are memorable, malleable, built from quality materials, and well maintained.

Well I like most of that! Although this booklet is described as a must read for all those involved in city design and planning, it’s much too good, much too accessible and concise to be left to those professionals. It should be of interest to anyone with an interest in, and concern about. transport in our towns and cities. In 52 pages all the ten principles are explained and there are case studies from ten cities around the world. It is not too text-heavy, is sumptuously illustrated, with lots of good diagrams, and is one of the best things of its kind I’ve come across. ON HIS way to creating the world’s biggest Louis Vuitton outlet luxury group and becoming the richest man in France, Bernard Arnault has made a career of swallowing grand, family-owned businesses. Over the years he has picked many a fight with founders of luxury Louis Vuitton handbags outlet firms, or their heirs, who were unwilling to sell discount Louis Vuitton handbags. He also fought bitterly and unsuccessfully with François Pinault, his archrival, over the takeover of Gucci, an Italian fashion house. The French press called it the “handbag war”. Three months ago Mr Arnault began what may become his longest, most spectacular takeover battle yet. At the end of October his group, Moët Hennessy cheap Louis Vuitton handbags, announced that it had amassed a 17.1% stake in Hermès, a family-owned maker of silk scarves and expensive Louis Vuitton 2011 handbags. On December 21st LVMH said it had increased its stake to 20.2%. Mr Arnault’s offensive took the descendants of Thierry Hermès, a saddlemaker who founded the company in 1837, by surprise. LVMH on sale built the stake through cash-settled equity swaps with three banks that dated back to 2008, when the luxury industry was in a deep crisis. The use of these derivative contracts allowed Louis Vuitton wallets clearance to skirt disclosure requirements and produced a nice profit for Mr Arnault, who had bet on Hermès’s stellar rebound. The five dozen heirs who own 73% of Hermès are not happy about the intruder. They want the company to remain independent and keep its tradition of craftsmanship, which they fear would be lost in a big, commercially minded group like Louis Vuitton handbags clearance. On December 5th the family said they would create a holding company into which they would put 51% of Hermès’s shares. It would have the right to buy out any member wanting to sell his stake. This involves a financial sacrifice, since those who put their shares into the holding will surrender part of their dividends so they can be used to buy Louis Vuitton handbags out other members. Mr Arnault insists that his intentions are amicable. Louis Vuitton 2011 is aiming to be a supportive long-term shareholder of Hermès, and wants to contribute to the preservation of the group’s Frenchness and its family-firm attributes. Patrick Thomas, the chief executive of Hermès, maintains that it does not need help or advice from Louis Vuitton outlet store, pointing out that Hermès shares have done better than those of cheap Louis Vuitton wallets since Hermès went public in 1993.</p>
