A Project of ITDP

Vision of Ahmedabad

Vision of Ahmedabad draws together six leading architects from Ahmedabad to imagine what the city could look like in 2030. The vision they have created embraces the unique character of Ahmedabad while seeking a more equitable and environmentally sustainable future. This project is part of Our Cities Ourselves (OCO), a global collaborative program initiated by the Institute for Transport and Development Policy (ITDP).  Both OCO and Vision of Ahmedabad are guided by a set of eight Principles of Transport in Urban Life that prioritize the needs of people in how we plan our cities and transport systems.

Many thanks to the local architects—Kamal Mangaldas, Parul Zaveri & Nimish Patel, Rajeev Kathpalia, Bimal Patel, Aniket Bhagwat, and Apurva Amin—who developed large-scale images that explore how the city’s streets and public spaces can become more appealing, inclusive, and conducive to walking and cycling. The architects met frequently to discuss and debate their proposals, and have been guided by the Our Cities Ourselves Citizens’ Council, a group of distinguished leaders from various sectors in Ahmedabad.

These renderings are just a starting point for dialogue. Any visioning process must incorporate the views of citizens as well architects, planners, engineers, and government officials. The active participation of citizens provides the determination and the energy needed to ensure the vision flowers. Let’s start the conversation about how to improve the quality of our lives and realize a new vision of our cities, ourselves.
