Street Harmony (Jamalpur)
HCP Design and Management Private Limited
Founded in year 1411, Ahmedabad celebrated its 600th anniversary in 2011. This city of entrepreneurs, once known as the ‘Manchester of East’ for its role as a world-class textile hub, was also the launching point for the struggle for Indian Independence. Mahatma Gandhi started out on the Salt March from the Sabarmati Ashram, located in Ahmedabad. The city is presently vying for UNESCO’s World Heritage city status for its living heritage- the walled city of Ahmedabad. The city captured the imagination of the world and earned accolades at national and international levels for the successful launch of Janmarg, a full-featured bus rapid transit system, in 2009.
Today, private motor vehicles ownership is on the rise, with more than 200 vehicles added daily, and Ahmedabad has the second highest two-wheeler population in the country. City streets, once filled with pedestrians and cyclists, have left no space for them today.
Jamalpur is in the east of Sabarmati, adorned by Jamalpur Gate- one of the 14 historic gates of the walled city. The largely vacant site of the former Calico Textile Mill creates a major opportunity for new mixed-use development. A popular vegetable market, Jagannath Hindu temple famous for its annual rathyatra, and the historic Baba Lului’s mosque all give the area a unique sense of cultural harmony.
In these renderings, Jamalpur becomes a site of harmony. The area is well connected to the city with Janmarg BRT and high quality pedestrian and cycling facilities. Public plazas and gardens now characterize the area, instead of walls, lined with beautiful outdoor cafés & restaurants. Mixed-use buildings with shaded walkways and arcades provide comfort to pedestrians from the heat and stimulate the street-life. Vibrant activities and recreational facilities attract people from all walks of life to the riverfront, making it a place for community gathering. Jamalpur becomes a beacon of progressive development co-existing with cultural and historic richness.
